Prostate Health

From Risk To Diagnosis

Before You Book

The prostate plays an important role in urinary and reproductive health, and conditions such as enlargement, inflammation, and prostate cancer become more common with age. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, and while often slow‑growing, early detection can make a significant difference in treatment options and outcomes. Which is why understanding your risk and knowing your testing options matters.

Prostate Symptoms

  • Needing to pee more often, especially at night

  • Urgency or difficulty starting, weak flow or dribbling or Feeling the bladder doesn’t empty fully

  • Pain or burning when urinating

  • Blood in urine or semen

  • Pelvic, hip, or lower‑back pain

  • Sexual symptoms such as erectile difficulties or painful ejaculation

  • Many prostate conditions — including early prostate cancer — can cause no symptoms at all.

PSA Testing Limitations

  • PSA can rise due to benign causes such as infection or inflammation

  • A raised PSA does not always mean cancer

  • Some prostate cancers do not raise PSA levels

Getting the Most Accurate PSA Result

  • Avoid ejaculation for 48 hours before the test

  • Avoid vigorous exercise, especially cycling, for 48 hours

  • Rebook if you have a urinary infection or fever

  • Tell your clinician about medications that affect PSA

  • Avoid PSA testing soon after prostate procedures, including anal penetration, rectal examinations, catheterisation, cystoscopy, or biopsy, as these can temporarily raise PSA

You don’t need a prostate examination to have PSA blood tests. However, if you’d like to discuss symptoms or would benefit from an examination, this can be offered during a consultation.
